TBA21–Academy announces new exhibition opening date for Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation at Ocean Space, Venice 

20 May – 29 November 2020

Ocean Space is to open its second season on 20 May with a research exhibition by Territorial Agency, curated by Daniela Zyman, examining the rapid transformation of the oceans in the age of the Anthropocene. The exhibition will be presented from 20 May – 29 November 2020, instead of 22 March – 27 September as previously announced. The postponement of the opening is a precautionary measure in light of the recent public health situation related to the COVID-19.

Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation investigates the impact of human activities on the world ocean and ways to address new forms of collaboration to safeguard its vitality and preserve its multiple ecologies. The exhibition will coincide with the first Ocean Fellowship programme held at Ocean Space in 2020

Commenting on the decision to move the dates of the exhibition, Director of TBA21–Academy, Markus Reymann said: 

“Considering the ongoing and serious health situation around the world, in our case specifically in northern Italy, we have decided to take precautionary measures and open the exhibition in May. We are deeply concerned by recent developments and the events that have affected Venice since late last year. We hope that the public programme at Ocean Space can contribute to a much-needed dialogue and discussion about the losses and our future under the effects of the Anthropocene. Our thoughts are with those affected by the recent coronavirus outbreak all around the world.”

The exhibition will inaugurate the second season at Ocean Space which takes place in the aftermath of the 2019 acqua alta – the highest tide levels in the city for more than half a century. Reassessing the connections between land and sea, Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation synthesises three years of intersectional research, commissioned by TBA21–Academy, to unfold one of the most extensive readings of the Anthropocene ocean to date, revealing the scope and magnitude of the impact of human activity.
